Outsider YP, previously known as Young Phantom and one part of Cork/Tralee hip-hop collective ApocalypsE, struck out with his first official solo release in July 2015. That debut came fresh off a victorious rampage through the Irish gig & festival circuit, including an appearance at Body & Soul. Ever since then he has continued to establish himself as a solo artist and has been featured on the BBC and The Thin Air as well as getting his music aired by SPIN South West, RTE 2MX and more.
This alternative and conceptual artist has continued working and growing ever since, pushing the boundaries of genres with his ever changing music. Inspired by Anime, Manga and comic books, as well as artists such as Lupe Fiasco, Childish Gambino and J. Cole, he has a unique blend of reality and fiction in lyrics delivered in various flows and over unorthodox beats.
Recorded, mixed and mastered at his very simple home studio in Cork City, latest album Sadboy ULTRA is sonically intriguing - a Hip-Hop album with very little rapping and a lot of alternative and indie nuances. The sound is purposely not perfectly polished and slightly rough around the edges, a preference by Yp for his music. He feels that more emotion and what he refers to as “the vibe” comes across when audio is not ultra crisp and perfect. This preference is one of the key reasons why he is artistically attracted to artists such as the late XXXtentacion and the British rock infused rapper Scarlxrd.
